Digital Story Trail
The objective

The aim of the Sydney Coastal AR Trail was to bring to life the history of Sydney, using augmented reality technology and mobile phones to offer tourists a unique, self-guided journey enriched with educational and entertaining content. By bringing to life the stories and characters of Sydney's past, the project sought to create an engaging experience that blends historical learning with the latest in digital innovation, allowing visitors to explore the city's heritage in a novel and immersive way.

Breaking Down The Brief

Concept Development: Our journey began with an in-depth exploration of Sydney City's rich historical layers, identifying key narratives that could engage both locals and tourists. In collaboration with city historians and cultural experts, we selected stories that reflected the city's diverse past.

Technical Design: The next step involved designing the AR journey, focusing on user-friendly interaction and technical reliability. Our team developed a seamless AR story trail that brought the city's history to life in an engaging and accessible manner.

Content Creation: At the heart of our project was the storytelling. We developed engaging narratives, created lifelike 3D models of historical figures and building using references images, and produced immersive soundscapes. Each element was carefully crafted to transport users back in time, offering a window into Sydney City's historical evolution.

User Experience Design: We designed the AR experience to be easily accessible via smartphones, ensuring a user-friendly interface. Through thorough testing, we ensured the experience was immersive yet straightforward, enriching visitors' exploration of Sydney City.

The Process

The development of the digital story trail involved a meticulous selection of sites that already had the infrastructure to support storytelling, such as statues and historical buildings. For example, the statues of Cook and Bligh served as focal points for tales about these historical figures, while Cadman's Cottage was used as a backdrop to bring historical characters to life. In The Rocks,  we overlayed historical photographs, effectively illustrating the area's transformation over time. To create a seamless and engaging trail, 3D scans of these locations were taken, around which a narrative journey was crafted. This narrative trail guides visitors through each site, providing them with a rich, layered experience that not only educated them about Sydney's past but also entertains them with the power of spatial storytelling.
